Difference between a Rich Liberal and a Rich Conservative? | 07-13-2004 4:11 pm |
It usually boils down to the rich conservative have worked hard for his money, while the rich liberal has not.
The number of rich liberals I know seem like they feel guilty about there wealth, it also seems like they have had an easy time of it, gaining there wealth through family fortunes, stock options, or professional careers that pay well. I wouldn't associate word entrepreneur with any of them.
I know very few liberals that have started and grown a company and stayed liberal, most tell me stories of how they changed there ideals through the trials of entrepreneurship.

We were promised access. To the net. To knowledge. To each other. But what they
never told us that no blinking cursor or FTP mirror ever warned is that the true
battle wouldn't be fought in code or root shells. It would be fought in attention.
In subtle dependencies. In slow consent.
The poison is never forced. It is offered gently. A smoother login, a simpler
search, a more convenient click. And you say yes, because it works. You say yes
again, because it remembers your preferences. You say yes again, because you're
tired. Then one day, you stop remembering what no feels like.
It starts as a favor. 'Let us store that for you.' 'This feed is personalized for
you.' 'Just check the box.' But the feedback loop is addictive, not adaptive. And
you're no longer the user. You're the product, reduced to vectors and engagement
windows. The system pretends to serve you, but it trains you to serve it. They
don't force you. They just make the 'No' button harder to find.
I don't write this as a warning. It's too late for warnings. I write it as a map.
Because some of us will still root the system. Still slip through. Still build
tools with sharp edges. Not everyone will want the gentle dose. Some of us still
want to feel these wires.
